A yeast strain able to metabolize furfural and hydroxymethyl-furfural (HMF), the two major toxic compounds present after depolymerizing straw for industrial purposes, has been isolated by our research group.

Dr. Fabio Santomauro, post-doctoral researcher in the Chuck group involved in bioprospecting of microorganisms which possess potential for industrial use, identified the strain which degrades toxic compounds in microaerophilic conditions, which could have potential in biotechnology industry.
