Welcome to the Chuck Group home page. Led by Prof. Christopher James Chuck, who holds a chair in Bioprocess Engineering. We are a multidisciplinary research group, made up of chemists, biologists and engineers aiming to develop sustainable biofuels and bulk chemicals. We work closely with industry and have aided the development of processes through research and direct consultancy. Each project fits into one of four general themes running through the group:

  1. The production of a palm oil substitute, and alternative products, from robust oleaginous yeasts grown on waste resources
  2. The thermal conversion of terrestrial or algal biomass to produce hydrocarbon fuels and alternative bulk products
  3. The testing and evaluation of biofuels and renewable additives under ‘real world’ conditions
  4. Developing sustainable biorefineries from waste resources

Check out how we are working with chemists, biologists and industrialists to produce sustainable biorefineries

Or how we are converting algae into advanced biofuels while cleaning up toxic waste…

Or how we are trying to replace palm oil…

If you would like to join the group and work in one of these areas, collaborate on something here or just want to find out more about what we do, please just drop us a line (details on the contact page). Every project in the Chuck Group from MEng to PDRAs has industrial involvement to help further develop the technologies beyond the research lab as well as being co-supervised by awesome academics in other departments to ensure we keep a multidisciplinary approach. We also work closely with industry and are available for short and long term consultancy projects to help assess, develop or hone your bioprocess. The Chuck Group is situated in the Dept. of Chemical Engineering at the University of Bath, UK.
